Mitchell D. Potts, Bribery of a Government Official, Georgia 2000

Washington – A sordid tale of greed and betrayal at the Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany (MCLB-Albany) has reached its conclusion as Mitchell D. Potts, 48, and Jeffrey S. Philpot, 35, both from Sylvester, Ga., have pleaded guilty to bribery charges.

In a stunning admission, Potts, former Traffic Office Supervisor for the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), and Philpot, former Lead Transportation Assistant, revealed their role in a scheme that funneled millions of dollars in federal funds to local transportation companies. They stood accused of delaying shipments and creating ‘ghost shipments’ to ensure business went to Person A’s trucking firms.

During the plea hearing, Potts admitted receiving approximately $209,000 in kickbacks, while Philpot confessed to accepting around $523,000. Both men face up to 15 years in prison and fines totaling twice the amount of the government’s loss.

Potts and Philpot have agreed to forfeit their ill-gotten gains and pay restitution to the Department of Defense as part of their plea agreements.

U.S. Attorney Michael Moore vowed, ‘My office will continue to investigate this type of corruption, plucking bad apples from the barrel whenever we find one.’

The investigation was led by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, with assistance from various federal agencies.
