Ibrahim Adam, Wire Fraud, Pennsylvania 2024

Ghanaian men behind a romance scam have been sentenced to prison in Pennsylvania. Ibrahim Adam, 33, and Kelvin Aggrey-Arthur, 28, both Ghanaian citizens, were found guilty of conspiring to commit wire fraud.

Adam was sentenced to 33 months’ imprisonment by United States District Court Judge Christopher C. Conner, while Aggrey-Arthur received a 40-month sentence on December 17, 2021, also by Judge Conner.

Both men will serve a two-year term of supervised release following their imprisonment. In addition to their prison sentences, Adam and Aggrey-Arthur were ordered to pay restitution to their victims, totaling $94,100 and $25,100 respectively.

The romance scam, which took place in 2019 and 2020, involved Adam and Aggrey-Arthur developing online relationships with victims and then requesting money for various fraudulent reasons, including travel, medical treatment, housing, and schooling.

The case was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Susquehanna Township Police Department, and the Dauphin County Criminal Investigation Division. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carlo D. Marchioli prosecuted the case.

United States Attorney John C. Gurganus stated that both men had admitted to perpetrating the romance scam, which highlights the need for the public to be cautious when engaging in online relationships.

The court’s decision serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit vulnerable individuals for financial gain. As the investigation and prosecution of such crimes continue, it is essential that the public remains vigilant and reports any suspicious activity to the authorities.
