Pine Ridge Woman Indicted for Theft of Government Property
Bonita Ghost Dog, a 54-year-old woman from Pine Ridge, South Dakota, has been accused of stealing from a government program. According to a federal indictment, Ghost Dog sold items belonging to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Distribution Program between May 2006 and September 2013.
The indictment charges that Ghost Dog kept the money from the sales for her personal gain. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and a $100 assessment to the Federal Crime Victims’ Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
Ghost Dog pleaded not guilty to the indictment on January 29, 2015, after being released on bond. A trial date has not been set, but Assistant U.S. Attorney Ben Patterson is prosecuting the case.
The investigation into Ghost Dog’s alleged theft was conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The case is a reminder of the importance of accountability in government programs.
Bonita Ghost Dog is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The indictment is merely an accusation, and she will have her day in court to defend herself against these allegations.
A federal grand jury indicted Ghost Dog on January 21, 2015. She appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica Duffy on January 29, 2015.
