Washington D.C. – Jermaine Knight, a 36-year-old convicted felon, was handed down a sentence of over three years in prison for assaulting an inmate and unlawful firearm possession, announced U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

Knight’s punishment includes a total of forty-three months behind bars, with twenty months for the unlawful possession of a firearm charge and an additional twenty-three months for felony strangulation. His sentence is to be served consecutively and followed by three years of supervised release.

The defendant pleaded guilty to both charges on July 17, 2025. Knight admitted that while walking his dog with a ghost gun, he accidentally shot himself in the thigh. He initially claimed to have been shot by an unknown attacker, but police determined it was self-inflicted.

Adding to his transgressions, Knight confessed to assaulting and strangling a fellow inmate in the D.C. Superior Court holding cell on December 18, 2024. The incident occurred while both men awaited their court hearings. Knight is accused of sucker punching the other inmate, hitting him in the head and face numerous times, then strangling the victim for five seconds. He is also alleged to have cleaned up the victim’s blood with sandwich bread.

Joining the announcement were Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department and U.S. Marshal Robert A. Dixon of the Marshals Service. U.S. Attorney Pirro, along with Chief Smith and U.S. Marshal Dixon, commended the efforts of law enforcement agencies in investigating and prosecuting the case.

The sentence was announced by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kadian D. Carter, who prosecuted Knight.
