The Norfolk, Virginia streets were hit with a chilling revelation as 25-year-old Robert James Gibson, a Roxobel, North Carolina native, pleaded guilty to possession of stolen firearms on [date]. The crimes, which unfolded in Virginia Beach, left authorities stunned.

According to a statement of facts filed with the plea agreement, Gibson and his co-conspirator broke into AWH Arms in Virginia Beach, making off with 22 firearms. These stolen guns were then sold to individuals on the streets, further escalating the danger.

This case came to light when a drunken individual, under the influence, started firing a gun into the air outside a night club. Following a call to the police, authorities were able to recover the firearm and discovered it was one of the stolen guns from the AWH Arms break-in. The intoxicated individual identified both Gibson and his co-conspirator as the sellers of the stolen firearm.

Gibson was indicted by a federal grand jury on June 3, 2015. When Gibson is sentenced on December 3, 2015, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and will be determined by the court based on the advisory Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

In a joint announcement, U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente and Charles E. Smith, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) Washington Field Division, expressed their commitment to combating gun crimes in the community.
