MICHIGAN CITY, IN – A repeat offender is off the streets after a federal judge handed down a hefty sentence for possessing illegal firearms. Santana Miller, 37, of Michigan City, Indiana, will spend 87 months behind bars after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence, delivered by U.S. District Court Judge Robert L. Miller, Jr., includes a three-year term of supervised release following his imprisonment.
The case, investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) alongside the Michigan City Police Department, revealed Miller was found with both a handgun and a rifle in April 2022. This wasn’t a first offense. Miller was already on federal supervised release stemming from a prior conviction for a controlled substance. Federal prosecutors successfully argued that his extensive criminal history – four prior felony convictions – clearly demonstrated a pattern of disregard for the law and public safety.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank E. Schaffer prosecuted the case, presenting evidence that painted Miller as a clear and present danger. The prosecution emphasized the risk posed by an individual with a history of serious offenses being illegally armed. The judge evidently agreed, imposing a sentence well above the minimum required by law. Sources within the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana stated the sentence sends a strong message to other convicted felons considering similar actions.
“This isn’t about taking guns from law-abiding citizens,” stated a senior ATF agent familiar with the investigation, speaking on background. “It’s about getting guns out of the hands of people who are legally prohibited from having them, people who have already demonstrated a willingness to break the law and put others at risk. Miller’s history speaks for itself.” The agent also confirmed that the firearms recovered in the case will be traced to determine their origin and any potential links to other crimes.
The Department of Justice highlighted this case as part of its “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN) initiative. PSN aims to unite federal, state, and local law enforcement with community organizations to combat violent crime and gun violence. The current iteration of PSN, launched in May 2021, focuses on building trust within communities, supporting preventative programs, and strategically targeting enforcement efforts.
Miller’s case underscores the ongoing battle against illegal gun possession and the commitment of federal agencies to enforce existing laws. While 87 months won’t erase the danger he posed, it will, at least for a time, remove a threat from the streets of Michigan City. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana, led by Clifford D. Johnson, continues to prioritize cases involving violent crime and illegal firearms.
