Repeat Offender Lands Decade-Long Sentence for Cocaine Trafficking

McAllen, Texas – In a stark reminder of the consequences of repeated offenses, 63-year-old Pharr resident Gilberto Eloy Ramirez has been handed a significant sentence following his conviction of possession with intent to distribute 11 kilograms of cocaine.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Ramirez pleaded guilty to the charges on October 1, 2020. This marked the latest in a long line of convictions for the repeat offender, who has a history of seven prior convictions for drug trafficking.

At the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Chief Judge Randy Crane emphasized Ramirez’s status as a career offender, noting that despite spending a substantial amount of time in prison for past crimes, he continued to make poor choices. As a result, Ramirez was ordered to serve a 262-month sentence, to be followed by five years of supervised release.

The investigation into Ramirez’s activities began in May 2019, when law enforcement officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by the defendant. During the stop, officers discovered two plastic bags of cocaine in Ramirez’s pocket. A subsequent search of his residence and property uncovered multiple bricks of cocaine weighing a combined 11 kilograms, as well as a scale, plastic wrap, razor blades, heat seal bags, and a loaded 9 mm caliber pistol.

Ramirez has been remanded in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future. The Drug Enforcement Administration conducted the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys M. Alexis Garcia and Laura Garcia prosecuting the case.
