Girty Caught Red-Handed: Felon Fires Off Gun Charges

MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – In a move that will leave you wondering how anyone can be so reckless, Kelly Don Girty, Jr., 30, of Gore, Oklahoma, pleaded guilty to violating federal firearm laws.

The charges stem from an investigation by the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which revealed that on January 7, 2024, Girty, a convicted felon, was in possession of a .22 caliber, bolt action rifle that had been shipped and transported in interstate commerce.

This isn’t the first time Girty has gotten himself into hot water. His prior conviction is still lingering, and it’s clear he hasn’t learned from his mistakes. His blatant disregard for the law will now cost him dearly as he faces the music in court.

The Honorable Jason A. Robertson, U.S. Magistrate Judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, accepted the plea and ordered the completion of a presentence investigation report. Until sentencing, Girty will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshal.

Girty’s fate now rests in the hands of the court, but one thing is certain – his actions have consequences. Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan E. Soverly will argue the case, pushing for justice to be served.

Girty’s case serves as a stark reminder that violating federal firearm laws will not be tolerated. His story is a cautionary tale of how one mistake can snowball into a lifetime of regret.
