Deborah A. Mattie, Issuing Forged Checks, Theft of Government Money, Access Device Fraud, Pennsylvania 2016

The Finney Funeral Home in Glassport has been victimized by a resident of the same town, 48-year-old Deborah A. Mattie, who pleaded guilty to issuing forged checks, theft of government money, and access device fraud.

Mattie, a resident of Glassport, Pennsylvania, entered her guilty plea in federal court before United States District Judge Gustave Diamond. According to information presented to the court at the guilty plea, Mattie defrauded the Finney Funeral Home.

The charges against Mattie carry a maximum total sentence of 30 years in prison, a fine of $750,000 or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Assistant United States Attorney Robert S. Cessar is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Allegheny County Police Department conducted the investigation leading to the guilty plea.

The court released Mattie on bond pending sentence, which has been scheduled for May 4, 2016. The exact impact of the scam on the Finney Funeral Home has not been disclosed.

Mattie’s crimes have left the community in Glassport stunned. ‘This is a disturbing case of a local resident taking advantage of a trusted institution in our community’, said a local resident. ‘We expect more from our neighbors.’

The case is a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in protecting against financial crimes. As the investigation continues, the Grimy Times will provide updates on any new developments in this case.
