Gonzalo Sanchez, Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering, Texas 2024

A 52-year-old Mexican national has pleaded guilty to his role in a two-year, multimillion-dollar trade-based money laundering conspiracy to move drug trafficking proceeds through Texas to Mexico.

Gonzalo Sanchez, 52, of Texarkana, Arkansas, admitted to conspiring with others to launder millions of dollars in drug trafficking proceeds through the Black Market Peso Exchange, a system used by Mexican cartels to exchange cash for US dollars.

According to court documents, Sanchez worked with others to move the money from Texas to Mexico, where it was used to fund further drug trafficking activities.

The Black Market Peso Exchange scheme involves exchanging cash for US dollars through a network of money brokers and middlemen, often using legitimate businesses as fronts to hide the true nature of the transactions.

Sanchez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of $500,000.

The case was investigated by the US Department of Justice’s Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section, in conjunction with the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas.

Sanchez is scheduled to be sentenced on March 15, 2024, and faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $500,000.

The investigation into the Black Market Peso Exchange scheme is ongoing, and authorities are working to disrupt the flow of money into Mexico from the US.

Gonzalo Sanchez’s guilty plea marks a significant victory in the fight against money laundering and drug trafficking in the US.
