Former NYPD Officer Charged with Conspiracy to Distribute Heroin, Fentanyl
Grace Rosa Baez, a 38-year-old resident of the Bronx, New York, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute heroin, fentanyl, and para-fluorofentanyl, federal authorities announced today.
Baez, who was a member of the New York City Police Department from 2012 until her resignation following her arrest, sold packages containing over one kilogram of heroin, over 400 grams of fentanyl, and over 100 grams of fentanyl analogue to a confidential source working with law enforcement on three occasions in October 2023.
The illicit transactions took place outside of Baez’s homes in the Bronx and Yonkers, New York, while she was on duty with the NYPD. Baez negotiated the price and quantity of the narcotics and arranged to deliver the narcotics to the confidential source.
The case against Baez was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the NYPD, with praise from U.S. Attorney Damian Williams for the exceptional investigative work of the agencies involved.
Baez faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for her crime, which is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Denise L. Cote on July 18, 2024.
The Office’s Narcotics Unit is handling the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda C. Weingarten in charge of the prosecution.
Baez’s actions are a stark betrayal of the trust placed in her as a member of the NYPD, and her selfish and reckless behavior has contributed to the nation’s deadly opioid crisis, said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams.
