KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In a major blow to the illicit drug trade, an Independence, Mo., man has been sentenced to 19 years and two months in federal prison without parole for his involvement in a large-scale drug trafficking operation.
Jonathan P. Henik, 45, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gary A. Fenner on April 4, 2024, after law enforcement officers seized 22 firearms and a large quantity of a variety of illegal drugs from his residence and his two campers in Bagnell, Mo.
The charges against Henik include two counts of being a felon in possession of firearms, two counts of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, possessing THC with the intent to distribute, two counts of possessing marijuana with the intent to distribute, possessing cocaine with the intent to distribute, and possession of an unregistered firearm.
The investigation into Henik’s activities began on Sept. 1, 2021, when Independence police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop while he was driving a Dodge Charger. However, Henik accelerated at a high rate of speed and fled the area, leading officers to pursue him.
On Oct. 5, 2021, officers executed a search warrant at Henik’s residence, where they found a staggering amount of evidence linking him to the drug trade. In his bedroom, investigators discovered 11 firearms, including a Glock 9mm semi-automatic firearm and a Colt .45-caliber firearm.
Officers also found two jars of THC wax and drug paraphernalia in the kitchen, as well as a black duffel bag containing a Palmetto 7.62 x 39mm firearm, several rounds of ammunition, 105 grams of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia in a closet near the front door.
In the garage, officers found six more firearms, including a Sig Sauer 9mm firearm and a Ruger 9mm firearm, as well as 928 grams of methamphetamine, a container of approximately 8.6 kilograms of THC edibles, and numerous heat-sealed bags containing a total of approximately 8.6 kilograms of marijuana.
On Aug. 2, 2023, Henik was arrested on a federal warrant related to the original indictment in this case following law enforcement surveillance at his Sandpiper and Catalina campers parked in Bagnell.
Officers searched the campers and found two firearms on the table in the living room of the Cataline camper, a loaded Browning Arms Company .22-caliber semi-automatic pistol with a silencer and a loaded Polymer80 9mm semi-automatic firearm with no markings.
In the Sandpiper camper, officers found a large bag of apparent marijuana on the table, as well as multiple bags of apparent marijuana and a plastic bag containing approximately 145 grams of cocaine in a black bag in the living room.
The total amount of marijuana recovered was approximately 1,723 grams (3.8 pounds).
Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone to possess a firearm if they have been convicted of a felony. Henik’s possession of 22 firearms, many of which were unregistered, is a clear violation of this law.
Henik’s sentence serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of engaging in large-scale drug trafficking activities. The investigation and prosecution of this case were a collaborative effort between local and federal law enforcement agencies.
