Grant Elmore Davis, Jr., Armed Bank Robbery, Florida 2023

Federal authorities have brought a second charge against Grant Elmore Davis, Jr., a 71-year-old man from Mansfield, Ohio, who allegedly robbed a Truist Bank branch in Fort Myers, Florida.

According to the indictment, Davis entered the bank on an undisclosed date and discharged a handgun while making verbal commands for the teller to give him money from the cash register. After obtaining money from the teller, Davis fled the bank.

The indictment charges Davis with armed bank robbery, discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, and possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon. This is not Davis’ first run-in with the law: in November 2001, he was convicted of armed bank robbery and using and carrying a short-barreled shotgun in relation to a crime of violence.

As a convicted felon, Davis is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law. The indictment also notifies Davis that the United States intends to forfeit the firearm and ammunition used to facilitate the offense.

If convicted on all counts, Davis faces a minimum mandatory penalty of 25 years, up to life, in federal prison. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in neighborhoods across the country.

The case was investigated by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Morgan.

An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.
