Great Falls Man Sentenced for Child Pornography

A Great Falls man has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in a disturbing case of child pornography. Shale Dean Brandt, 43, was sentenced to 72 months in prison for receipt of child pornography.

Brandt was found to have possessed a total of 551 specific images and 24 videos depicting child pornography on his electronic devices. The devices were seized during an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations, which was initiated after an Interpol tip revealed Brandt’s involvement in chats and his expressed interest in children.

A certified forensic examiner analyzed the devices and found that they contained files, images, and videos depicting child pornography. The videos showed prepubescent children involved in sexually explicit conduct. In one instance, Brandt communicated with a Montana woman who provided him with images of child pornography of her 10-year-old daughter.

Brandt was interviewed and consented to the search of his devices. He was subsequently charged and sentenced to 72 months in prison, 5 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment. He was also ordered to pay $33,136.40 in restitution.

The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Bartleson. It was part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood initiative, which was launched in 2006 to combat the proliferation of technology-facilitated crimes involving the sexual exploitation of children.

Project Safe Childhood is implemented through partnerships, including the Montana Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. The ICAC Task Force Program was created to assist state and local law enforcement agencies by enhancing their investigative response to technology-facilitated crimes against children.

Brandt’s sentence serves as a reminder of the severity of child pornography charges and the importance of protecting children from exploitation. The case highlights the need for continued efforts to combat technology-facilitated crimes and ensure the safety of our children.
