United States Attorney Beth Drake announced today that Travius Isaiah Mayer, a 26-year-old from Greenville, South Carolina, entered a guilty plea in federal court for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Mayer is facing up to ten years in federal prison after he admitted to possessing a Glock .40 caliber pistol during an incident on N. Watson Road that led to a single-car accident and gunfire.
The plea was accepted by United States District Judge Bruce Howe Hendricks, who will impose sentence following the review of the presentence report prepared by the U.S. Probation Office.
Evidence presented at the change of plea hearing revealed that Mayer exited his vehicle after the collision with a gun and fired it as a witness tried to follow him. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) seized the firearm and a spent shell casing from the scene. During an interview, Mayer confessed to driving the vehicle during the accident and owning the pistol, which he had recently purchased.
The case was investigated by the GCSO and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). First Assistant United States Attorney Lance Crick handled the prosecution. Mayer’s arrest was part of “Operation Real Time,” a program aimed at identifying individuals with significant criminal histories who continue to possess firearms in the Upstate community.
Since its inception in August 2015, Operation Real Time has led to the federal prosecution of over 97 defendants and the seizure of approximately 130 firearms and assorted ammunition. U.S. Attorney Beth Drake commended the partnership between local, state, and federal agencies involved in the case, emphasizing the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in removing violent repeat offenders from communities.
