Giovonni Dequese Cecil, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, South Carolina 2024

Greenville, SC – Giovonni Dequese Cecil, a 23-year-old resident of Greenville, has entered a guilty plea in federal court for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Cecil’s case is part of the aggressive ‘Operation Real-Time,’ aimed at taking violent repeat offenders off the streets.

Cecil, who had been previously convicted and was barred from possessing firearms, faces up to 10 years in federal prison. He was arrested on June 16, 2016, following a call to local authorities from his hotel room where he admitted to having guns and drugs.

During a search, deputies found a shotgun, rifle, ammunition, and a significant amount of drugs. The U.S. Probation Office will prepare a presentence report for the judge’s review before sentencing.

‘Operation Real-Time’ has since 2015 expedited federal prosecution of over 90 defendants with substantial criminal histories, seizing nearly 110 firearms. Greenville County Sheriff Will Lewis praised the program’s efforts to remove illegal weapons from violent offenders.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Max Cauthen is prosecuting Cecil’s case, with support from local and federal agencies including the Greenville Police Department, ATF, FBI, DEA, and others. U.S. Attorney Beth Drake highlighted the importance of state and federal partnerships in combating crime.
