Cornelius Alexander Thompson, a 38-year-old federal correctional officer, has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing an inmate and taking bribes at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County, Florida. Between January 2020 and August 9, 2023, Thompson engaged in a sexual act with a federal inmate under his authority, and between January 2020 and April 29, 2024, he received money to smuggle contraband into the prison. The contraband included synthetic marijuana, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cellphones.

Thompson’s crimes were investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice – Office of the Inspector General, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. He faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison on each count, and the United States will seek an order of forfeiture of $24,550, which represents the proceeds of the bribery offense.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk Watson. U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced the guilty plea, which marks a significant development in the case. A sentencing date has not yet been set.

The guilty plea highlights the ongoing issue of corruption within the federal prison system. Thompson’s actions not only abused his authority but also put the lives of inmates and fellow officers at risk.
