Detallion Owens, a 29-year-old Anchorage man, was involved in a violent domestic dispute in November 2024, where he assaulted his partner in front of a child. Owens, who was intoxicated at the time, pulled out a gun and pointed it at the victim’s head while she was holding a newborn. He then stole the victim’s phone and keys before fleeing in her car. Owens had a previous felony conviction for robbery and was on state probation for armed robbery and assault at the time of the incident.
Law enforcement officers later found Owens in the stolen car and attempted to apprehend him. Owens tried to flee by ramming the car into police vehicles and then on foot, but was eventually caught. A loaded handgun was found on the driver’s seat, and a loaded magazine fell from Owens’ person during the struggle with police.
Owens was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 21, 2025, and pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm on May 6, 2025. He was sentenced to over six and a half years in prison and will serve three years on supervised release after completion of his sentence.
The sentence reflects the seriousness of Owens’ crime, which was committed in front of a child and involved the use of a firearm. U.S. Attorney Michael J. Heyman stated that Owens’ actions earned him a lengthy sentence under federal law.
