FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS – A high-speed chase and a hefty payload of methamphetamine landed 42-year-old Bruce Wheeler of Hackett, Arkansas, a 188-month federal prison sentence. Wheeler was sentenced on May 22, 2019, by U.S. District Judge P.K. Holmes, III, following a guilty plea earlier this year.
The bust originated with a Bonanza Police officer observing Wheeler tearing down the highway on a motorcycle in May 2018. When the officer attempted a traffic stop, Wheeler bolted, leading to a pursuit that ended with the motorcycle crashed near the Oklahoma border. Officers found Wheeler attempting to recover his ride, and a search revealed five zip-lock bags stashed under the seat – bags brimming with the white crystal that fuels addiction.
Lab analysis by the DEA Southwest laboratory confirmed the substance to be 741 grams of pure methamphetamine. That’s enough to devastate a community, and enough to earn Wheeler a serious federal rap. He was subsequently indicted by a federal grand jury and, after months of legal maneuvering, entered a guilty plea to one count of Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute in January 2019.
U.S. Attorney Duane (DAK) Kees for the Western District of Arkansas made the announcement, underscoring the commitment of federal agencies to dismantle drug trafficking operations in the region. “This sentence should send a clear message: those who flood our communities with dangerous drugs will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” a statement from the US Attorney’s office read.
The investigation was a multi-agency effort, involving the Drug Enforcement Administration, Bonanza Police Department, Fort Smith Police Department, Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the 12th/21st Drug Task Force. Assistant United States Attorney Candace Taylor skillfully prosecuted the case, navigating the complex legal landscape and securing the conviction.
Following his prison term, Wheeler will face five years of supervised release. Whether he’ll learn a lesson remains to be seen, but for now, the streets of Hackett – and the highways leading out of them – are a little safer. This case serves as a stark reminder of the relentless flow of narcotics through Arkansas and the dedication of law enforcement to stem the tide.
