Fresno hairstylist Anthony David Flores and actress Anna Rene Moore are facing a 12-count indictment for a multimillion-dollar caregiver fraud scheme targeting a wealthy Malibu physician, the Justice Department announced. The duo is accused of defrauding the victim out of over $2.7 million before his death and attempting to loot his estate of more than $20 million.
Flores, 46, was arrested in Fresno last week and pleaded not guilty. He’s set for a detention hearing on February 10th in the Eastern District of California. Moore, 39, an actress and former yoga studio owner, was nabbed in Houston upon arrival from Mexico and will appear in Los Angeles federal court.
The fraudulent duo used false pretenses to befriend the victim, who suffered from mental illness, and gained access to his beachfront Malibu home and finances. They allegedly controlled the victim’s life, provided drugs like marijuana and LSD, and isolated him from family and friends. In September 2017, Flores fraudulently obtained powers of attorney, using them to open bank accounts and divert funds to himself and Moore.
After the victim’s death in May 2018, Flores and Moore returned to his home and continued withdrawing large sums. They are accused of changing authentication settings on his $60-million brokerage account and initiating two $1-million wire transfers to their own accounts while the victim was under the influence of LSD.
The Justice Department charges include conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud, aggravated identity theft, money laundering, and engaging in a monetary transaction in criminally derived property. The victims’ families are now seeking justice for the loss of millions and the tragic outcome of this betrayal.
