TYLER, Texas – In a chilling display of border enforcement, Jorge Martinez-Abundis, a 38-year-old Mexican national illegally living in Hallsville, has been charged with unlawfully returning to the United States after having been deported four times. The Eastern District of Texas Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs announced the charges this week.
The federal grand jury indicted Martinez-Abundis for illegal reentry by a previously deported alien. According to the indictment, on February 14, 2025, Martinez-Abundis was discovered in the Eastern District of Texas, having violated his fourth deportation order. The suspect now faces up to 20 years in federal prison and could be deported once again.
This case is a critical component of Operation Take Back America, a formidable nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and safeguarding communities from violent crime. The operation integrates resources from the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
Homeland Security Investigations is investigating the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren Richards leading the prosecution. The federal grand jury’s indictment serves as a stark reminder that illegal reentry is a serious offense, carrying severe penalties for those who dare to break our borders.
A federal indictment does not constitute proof of guilt. Martinez-Abundis is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. As Texas grapples with the challenges of illegal immigration, this case underscores the importance of robust border security and the justice system’s commitment to enforcing our laws.
