Hamburg Woman Sentenced for Tax Scheme
A Hamburg woman has been sentenced to time served for her role in a brazen tax scheme. Sheri L. Becirovic, 47, was handed down a sentence by Chief U.S. District Court Judge William M. Skretny, who deemed that 12 months behind bars was sufficient punishment for her crimes.
Becirovic was convicted of conspiracy to defraud the government, and was ordered to pay $24,341.00 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service. The defendant had obtained the social security numbers of seven family members and friends, which she provided to a co-conspirator, Clifton Jackson.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross, Becirovic had given Jackson the social security numbers, along with her own, in order to file fraudulent tax returns for the tax year 2011. Ross praised the efforts of law enforcement agencies in bringing the case to a close.
The investigation was spearheaded by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Toni M. Weirauch, and the United States Postal Inspection Service under the direction of Kevin Niland, Inspector in Charge, Boston Division.
The case against Becirovic is a stark reminder of the dangers of identity theft and tax fraud. ‘The actions of individuals like Becirovic have a far-reaching impact on our communities and our economy,’ said Ross.
