Defendants Charged in $50M Healthcare Fraud Scheme

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara announced today the arrest of six individuals, including a cardiologist and neurologist, in connection with a 12-year healthcare fraud scheme that bilked public healthcare programs and private insurance companies out of more than $50 million.

The defendants, Asim Hameedi, Fawad Hameedi, Michelle Landoy, Desiree Scott, Emad Soliman, and Arif Hameedi, were charged with healthcare fraud, identity theft, and making false statements. The scheme allegedly involved the submission of over $50 million in fraudulent claims to Medicaid, Medicare, and other private health insurance companies between 2003 and November 2015.

Asim Hameedi, the president and owner of City Medical Associates, a cardiology and neurology clinic based in Bayside, New York, is accused of conducting the scheme with others employed at or associated with the clinic. The scheme allegedly involved the use of false diagnoses and unnecessary procedures to defraud healthcare programs and private insurance companies.

The FBI, HHS-OIG, and the NYPD were involved in the investigation, which was led by Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. The defendants were arrested today and will be presented in Manhattan federal court before Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn.

‘As alleged, these defendants ran a medical practice that bilked public healthcare programs and private insurance companies of more than $50 million,’ said Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. ‘Thanks to the hard work of federal and state investigators, this fraud has been revealed and the alleged perpetrators forced to face the consequences of their actions.’

The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, with assistance from the FBI, HHS-OIG, and the NYPD. The indictment and civil complaint are attached to this release.
