A Hammond woman’s attempt to hide a fugitive from DEA agents has landed her in serious trouble. Sandra Renee Keith, 34, pled guilty in federal court to one count of making false statements to a federal agent.
According to court records, DEA agents knocked on Keith’s door with an arrest warrant for Michael D. Brumfield on May 6, 2013. Keith told the agents that Brumfield was not at her apartment, but was staying elsewhere. In reality, Brumfield was hiding in Keith’s apartment, which Keith well knew.
Keith’s deception has put her on the wrong side of the law, and she now faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 5 years, a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment, and a $100 special assessment upon sentencing scheduled for January 8, 2014.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Julia K. Evans. This is a clear example of a white-collar crime, where an individual uses their position or influence to deceive and mislead.
Keith’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and a willingness to put herself and others at risk. Her guilty plea is a significant step towards accountability, and we hope that she will learn from her mistakes.
The investigation and prosecution of this case highlight the importance of cooperation and information-sharing between law enforcement agencies. The DEA’s efforts to bring Keith to justice are a testament to their commitment to keeping our communities safe.
As we continue to follow this story, we will provide updates on Keith’s sentencing and any other developments in the case. In the meantime, our thoughts are with the victims of Keith’s actions and their families.
