Devonte West, Heroin Possession with Intent to Distribute, Louisiana 2017

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In a grim turn of events, 21-year-old Devonte West, a resident of Hammond, Louisiana, has been indicted on serious charges following a tragic shooting incident. West is accused of possession with intent to distribute heroin and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

The deadly confrontation occurred on February 20, 2017, outside West’s residence after he and his cousin, Maurice Lloyd Jr., completed a drug transaction. The shooting left Lloyd dead, and West now faces the grim prospect of spending decades behind bars.

A search of West’s residence yielded approximately two ounces of heroin and Roxicodone pills, as well as multiple firearms. Further investigation revealed additional heroin that West attempted to discard before law enforcement arrived at his home after the shooting.

For his drug possession charge, West could face up to twenty years imprisonment and a fine of $1,000,000. The gun possession charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years imprisonment, which would be consecutive to any other sentence he receives.

The U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite emphasized that the indictment is merely an allegation and that West’s guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court.

Polite also commended the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office for their diligent work in this investigation, with Assistant United States Attorney Andre’ Jones leading the prosecution.
