BATON ROUGE, LA – A Baton Rouge man is facing federal charges in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old, federal authorities announced today. OCTAVIO BRINGAS‐POSADAS, 49, is accused of possessing a firearm as a prohibited person and illegally re-entering the United States after being previously removed.
According to a federal criminal complaint, BRINGAS‐POSADAS was deported to Mexico by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on March 22, 2012. He allegedly re-entered the country illegally and settled back in Baton Rouge. The complaint details that on March 13, 2017, the 16-year-old victim was found fatally wounded by a gunshot inside BRINGAS‐POSADAS’s home, where the two were reportedly alone. The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation.
Acting United States Attorney Corey Amundson didn’t mince words, stating: “Our prayers are with the victim’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. Be assured that our office will aggressively pursue violators of our federal firearm and immigration laws.” The statement underscores the seriousness with which federal prosecutors are approaching the case.
The investigation is a multi-agency effort, involving the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Louisiana, Louisiana State Police, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, ICE, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s Office is also providing assistance. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin R. Sanchez is prosecuting the matter.
BRINGAS‐POSADAS is currently charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and illegal re-entry into the United States by a removed alien.
