Earl Britt, Second-Degree Burglary, District of Columbia 2024

BREAKING: 36 Months for Hardware Heist

WASHINGTON – In a swift and decisive move, Earl Britt, 60, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced to 36 months in prison for burglarizing the W.S. Jenks & Sons Hardware store on February 12, 2024.

According to the investigation, Britt pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree burglary in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia on March 7, 2024. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith, of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

Surveillance video from the store showed Britt, described as a man in his 60s, destroying the store’s glass windowpane with a cinder block and crawling inside of the broken window. The video further captured Britt jumping behind the counter, searching the register drawers for cash, and fleeing the scene through the same broken window.

Britt was apprehended a short time later, after officers matched his description with the surveillance video and eyewitness account. The swift arrest was a result of the combined efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Graves and Chief Smith commended the work of those who investigated the case from the Metropolitan Police Department. They acknowledged the efforts of those who worked on the case from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, including Assistant U.S. Attorneys Anthony Cocuzza and Lindsey Miller, who investigated and prosecuted the case.

The W.S. Jenks & Sons Hardware store, located at 910 Bladensburg Rd, NE, was the target of Britt’s brazen burglary. Fortunately, the store manager received an alert on his phone, allowing him to provide footage from the surveillance video to law enforcement, which ultimately led to Britt’s capture.

The sentence handed down to Britt serves as a stern warning to those who seek to profit from such senseless acts of crime. As the investigation into this case demonstrates, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Metropolitan Police Department are committed to holding accountable those who commit crimes in our community.
