GREAT FALLS – A violent crime shook the Fort Peck Indian Reservation when a Wolf Point man attacked another man with a baseball bat. Harry B. Azure, 21, pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
Azure faces a maximum 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Leif M. Johnson.
On November 19, 2019, Azure and another individual broke through the door of the residence of the victim, identified as John Doe, and struck him multiple times in the head with a small baseball bat, leaving him severely injured. The victim was initially treated at a local hospital then flown to Billings due to the severity of his injuries.
The government alleged that the assault occurred days after an incident involving the other individual. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wendy A. Johnson is prosecuting the case, which was investigated by the FBI and Fort Peck Tribal Police.
Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris presided over the case and set sentencing for February 17, 2022. Azure remains detained pending further proceedings.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community safety and the consequences of violent crime. The community will be watching as Azure awaits his sentencing.
In related news, the Fort Peck Indian Reservation has been working to address the root causes of violence in the community. Efforts include increased community outreach and support for victims of crime.
