A tragic incident on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation took the life of a man in 2019. Now, his killer is behind bars. 35-year-old Joanna Sayetsitty of Fort Kipp, Montana, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in the fatal incident.

On August 22, 2019, Sayetsitty was driving around the Fort Kipp area with the victim. The two were drinking alcohol and listening to music when they got into a fight. The victim got out of the vehicle, and in a reckless manner, Sayetsitty struck him with her vehicle, causing his death.

The body was found three days later, and it was only identified after his clothing was described on social media. Sayetsitty admitted in court to driving the vehicle in a reckless manner, and striking the victim, causing his death.

According to U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich, Sayetsitty pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in August 2023. Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris presided over the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Wendy A. Johnson prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the FBI, Fort Peck Tribes Department of Law and Justice, and the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office.

Sayetsitty was sentenced to 18 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release. Her sentence is a harsh reminder of the consequences of reckless behavior behind the wheel.
