Mark A. Steffee, a 43-year-old resident of Hartville, Ohio, finds himself staring down the barrel of child pornography charges after authorities accused him of attempting to entice a 14-year-old girl into illegal sexual activity.
The United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Steven M. Dettelbach, announced that Steffee was charged with both enticement and possession of child pornography. The indictment reveals alleged online activities dating back to September 1, 2005, and again from March 5, 2013, where Steffee is said to have used the internet to target the young girl. In addition, he’s accused of possessing a computer with child porn on March 27, 2013.
Joining the grim parade are Marcus W. Cover, 30, from Midvale, Ohio; Kimberly Metzdorf, 23, of Ashtabula; and Nicholas Gerhardt, 68, of Canton. Each faced their own array of charges ranging from distributing to producing child pornography, and all have been accused of engaging in interstate commerce involving minors’ explicit images.
The severity of the sentences for these offenses will be decided by federal guidelines considering individual circumstances. Assistant United States Attorney Michael A. Sullivan is prosecuting the cases, which were investigated by a combination of agencies including the United States Secret Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Department of Homeland Security.
These charges serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation in the digital age, showcasing the collaborative efforts between federal and local law enforcement to protect our youth.
