Hassan Al Gharawi Convicted

A 54-year-old Iraqi national, Hassan Al Gharawi, has been convicted for conspiracy to violate gun export laws, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. The conviction is the result of a trial that exposed a complex conspiracy to smuggle firearms to Iraq.

From approximately November 2020 to June 2021, Gharawi conspired with others to knowingly stockpile, conceal and transport firearms in vehicle parts bound for Iraq. The jury heard that Gharawi received two deliveries in 2020 and 2021 totaling approximately 77 firearms, which he had stored in his home in Sugar Land, Texas.

The investigation led by the FBI, with the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, revealed that Gharawi played a significant role in the conspiracy. On June 10, 2021, authorities observed Gharawi load firearms into his vehicle and transport them to a storage facility. The jury saw photos of more than 500 firearms and listened to recordings of Gharawi discussing the trafficking plan.

The defense argued that Gharawi acted under duress from the traffickers in Iraq. However, the jury rejected those claims after seeing the extent of his involvement and found him guilty as charged. U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen presided over the trial and set sentencing for Jan. 21, 2026. At that time, Gharawi faces up to 20 years in prison for violating export laws. He also faces a maximum $1 million fine.

Previously released on bond, Gharawi was taken into custody following the conviction where he will remain pending sentencing. The conviction is a significant blow to those involved in the illegal trafficking of firearms. Assistant U.S. Attorneys John Pearson, Steven Schammel and Heather Winter are prosecuting the case, which highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in combating international crime.

The case against Hassan Al Gharawi serves as a reminder of the severity of consequences for those who engage in the illegal smuggling of firearms. The conviction is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies in disrupting and dismantling criminal networks that threaten national security. As Gharawi awaits sentencing, the community can take comfort in knowing that justice has been served and that efforts to combat the illegal trafficking of firearms will continue.
