WASHINGTON, D.C. – A petty argument over a hat escalated into a vicious knife attack in Washington’s Chinatown, landing 32-year-old Tanade Warsame a 66-month federal prison sentence. Warsame, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Judith Pipe on June 27, 2025, following a jury trial that concluded in September 2024. The incident, occurring on May 4, 2024, highlights the simmering violence that can erupt from even the most trivial disputes.
According to evidence presented at trial, the confrontation began as a simple agreement to settle a disagreement with fists. Warsame and the victim agreed to a fist fight over a hat, but the situation quickly spiraled out of control. Instead of engaging in a fair fight, Warsame allegedly produced a knife and repeatedly struck and slashed at the victim, inflicting three stab wounds. The brutality of the attack clearly resonated with the jury.
The jury found Warsame guilty of one count of assault with significant bodily injury while armed. Adding to the severity of the crime, the court noted that Warsame was already on release for another matter at the time of the stabbing. This violation of his prior release terms earned him an additional 12-month sentence. He also pleaded guilty to one count of contempt, resulting in a further 180-day sentence.
Judge Pipe’s sentencing breaks down to 48 months for the assault, 12 months for violating the terms of his release, and 180 days for contempt. Beyond the prison term, Warsame will also be subject to five years of supervised release upon his eventual discharge. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, led by Jeanine Ferris Pirro, and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), jointly announced the sentencing.
What makes this case particularly egregious is Warsame’s history in the area. Prior to the May 2024 attack, he had been specifically ordered to stay away from Chinatown in a previous legal matter. This blatant disregard for a court order further demonstrates a pattern of reckless behavior and a lack of respect for the law.
The investigation was conducted by the dedicated officers of the Metropolitan Police Department and the prosecutors of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Assistant United States Attorneys Jasmine Dohemann and former Assistant United States Attorney Katelyn Benton were responsible for securing the conviction and advocating for a substantial sentence in this case, sending a clear message that violent crime will not be tolerated in the nation’s capital.
