Hate Crimes Surge, LGBTQI+ Community Under Attack
Washington D.C. – The Justice Department has revealed a surge in hate crimes targeting the LGBTQI+ community, sparking concerns for the safety and well-being of its members. In a quarterly meeting with LGBTQI+ community stakeholders, Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke and the division’s LGBTQI+ working group heard about the array of topics affecting the community, including hate crimes, threats of violence, and discriminatory legislation.
Representatives from various federal government agencies attended the meeting, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Departments of Health and Human Services, Education, Housing and Urban Development, Labor, Homeland Security, Defense, and Veterans Affairs. The Justice Department has taken an all-of-department approach to protecting LGBTQI+ rights, engaging with organizations and stakeholders on issues affecting the community.
The Justice Department has recently challenged North Carolina’s bans on gender-affirming health care for transgender minors and filed an amicus brief in support of transgender individuals seeking medical treatment for gender dysphoria excluded from Medicaid coverage by a Florida administrative rule and state statute. The department has also prosecuted hate crimes based on LGBTQI+ status or affiliation with the LGBTQI+ community, addressed discrimination based on transgender status in employer-provided health insurance coverage, and combatted the criminalization of HIV status.
The Justice Department’s LGBTQI+ working group’s website details these efforts, including a virtual, nationwide community meeting outlining practical steps for protecting LGBTQI+ communities from hate-motivated attacks and threats of violence. Assistant Attorney General Clarke and the division’s LGBTQI+ working group meet with LGBTQI+ community stakeholders to address these pressing issues.
As the LGBTQI+ community continues to face threats and violence, the Justice Department remains committed to protecting its rights and ensuring justice is served. The recent surge in hate crimes serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by this community, and the Justice Department’s dedication to addressing these issues.
The Justice Department’s efforts to combat hate crimes and protect the LGBTQI+ community are ongoing, and Grimy Times will continue to provide updates on these developments as more information becomes available.
