Health Care Swindlers Get Served
South Carolina taxpayers are about to see some justice.
In a move to combat the growing problem of health care fraud, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has formed the Palmetto Health Care Fraud Task Force (PHCF Task Force). The task force is a multi-agency effort to crack down on those who defraud the health care system and recover taxpayer money.
The PHCF Task Force was created after the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office saw great success from a Health Care Fraud Working Group, which began meeting in February 2023. The task force brings together investigators from the Department of Labor and the South Carolina Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, as well as the FBI’s Data Analytics Response Team (DART), forensic accountants, and Intelligence Analysts.
Health care fraud is a massive burden on South Carolina taxpayers, with an estimated $23 billion spent on taxpayer-funded healthcare programs in 2023 alone. The Government Accountability Office estimates that up to 10% of that money is lost to waste, fraud, and abuse each year.
The PHCF Task Force will aggressively investigate allegations of false billings, COVID-19 fraud, violations of the Anti-Kickback Statute, and other schemes that victimize patients, health care providers, private insurers, and government insurers such as Medicare, TRICARE, and Medicaid.

Boroughs, U.S. Attorney for the District of South Carolina. “The Palmetto Health Care Fraud Task Force demonstrates our commitment to working with our partners to protect those seeking quality medical care and the federal programs meant to support them.”
With the PHCF Task Force on the job, South Carolina taxpayers can expect to see some serious action taken against those who would steal from them. The task force is a powerful tool in the fight against health care fraud, and it’s about time.
