STERLING HEIGHTS, MI — Carl Emerson Travis, 52, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for seven counts of aggravated assault on three deputy U.S. Marshals and four federal task force officers.
United States Attorney Dawn N. Ison announced the charges against Travis, who was apprehended after attempting to evade arrest during a high-speed chase on March 29, 2024.
The incident began when Travis saw law enforcement approaching and tried to flee in his vehicle. His car was propelled at high speeds in reverse, dragging a deputy U.S. Marshal and a task force officer along the way. Another officer was knocked to the ground, and several nearby officers were nearly hit as Travis’s vehicle traveled backwards.
“Our federal law enforcement officers put their lives at risk every day to keep us safe,” said Ison. “The actions of this defendant were reckless and put the lives of our officers in danger.”
Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Michigan, echoed Ison’s sentiments. “Mr. Travis not only attempted to evade arrest but also recklessly endangered the safety of the community and law enforcement personnel,” she said.
The investigation into the incident was conducted by the Michigan State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Nhan Ho is prosecuting the case.
