Brad Heard Sr., 57, of Camilla, Georgia, and his son, Brad Heard Jr., 35, from Leesburg, Georgia, were handed stiff prison sentences on Thursday for their involvement in a multi-million-dollar bank fraud scheme.
Their father-son team was sentenced to federal prison by U.S. District Court Judge W. Louis Sands after pleading guilty to charges of bank fraud on September 26, 2013. Brad Heard Sr. received 30 months behind bars while his son was sentenced to 33 months in prison. Both are also on the hook for a $5 million restitution order.
Their scheme revolved around bribes and kickbacks totaling $13 million paid to a banker and his wife from Bainbridge, Georgia. The couple’s reward was securing improper loans for the Heards, who used these funds to further their fraudulent activities.
U.S. Attorney Michael Moore labeled the Heards’ actions as an attempt to ‘game the system,’ adding that they now face the consequences of their crimes.
The investigation into this case was a joint effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Thomasville, and the United States Secret Service, Albany. Assistant United States Attorneys Jim Crane and Leah McEwen handled the prosecution.
