Orlando Brock, a 43-year-old from Hartwell, Georgia, and Walter Butler, Jr., aged 45, of Gainesville, Georgia, faced the music on July 30, 2014, when they were handed down severe sentences for their roles in a daring bank heist. United States Attorney Michael J. Moore announced that Brock was sentenced to serve 16 years (192 months) and Butler received a seven-year sentence (87 months) after a trial that lasted five days.
The duo was found guilty of armed bank robbery on April 21, 2014, following the crime that shook Lavonia, Georgia. According to evidence presented, on September 22, 2011, Brock, Butler, along with Allen Colbert and Juan Vladimir Camp, descended upon the North Georgia Credit Union, making off with nearly $310,500.
Brock was not just a participant but also an organizer of the heist, while Butler served as the getaway driver. The investigation into the crime was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, the Lavonia Police Department, and the Georgia State Patrol.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Moore made it clear that no criminal activity would go unpunished in his jurisdiction: ‘When people commit bank robberies in the Middle District of Georgia, they might as well pack a toothbrush because my office will use every resource we have to make sure they go straight to jail for a long time. It doesn’t matter if you are doing the planning or doing the driving, the law is going to ultimately catch up with you.’
J. Britt Johnson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Atlanta Field Office, echoed these sentiments: ‘The lengthy sentences imposed on these two defendants reflect the serious nature of armed bank robbery. The FBI is proud of the role it played in working with its law enforcement partners to get two violent offenders off our streets and making our community a safer place for all.’
