ATHENS, GA – A grim chapter in Lavonia’s history concluded today as Walter Butler, Jr., 45, of Gainesville, and Orlando Brock, 43, of Hartwell, faced justice for their roles in a brazen bank heist. United States Attorney Michael J. Moore announced the guilty verdicts against the duo following a four-day trial.
On September 22, 2011, Butler, accompanied by Allen Colbert, a/k/a “Juicy,” and Juan Vladimir Camp, invaded the North Georgia Credit Union with firearms at gunpoint. Pepper spray was deployed as they made off with nearly $310,000 from the tellers. Butler drove them away in a getaway truck, while Brock, the mastermind behind the operation, supplied the weapons and arranged for the drop-off.
Brock and Colbert entered guilty pleas in March 2013. Sentencing is scheduled for May 27th, with Butler facing up to 20 years imprisonment and Brock, Colbert, and Camp each facing up to 25 years. Brock also faces a mandatory seven-year sentence for firearm charges, with a life sentence as a possibility.
“This case showcases the power of cooperative federal, state, and local law enforcement,” stated Moore. “These defendants will serve lengthy terms behind bars due to their violent actions.” GBI Director Vernon Keenan echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the commitment to justice for such crimes.
The investigation was led by the FBI, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, and Lavonia Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Graham Thorpe and Sonja Profit handling the prosecution. For inquiries, contact Pamela Lightsey at (478) 621-2603.
