Damaging Energy Facility Lands Man in Hot Water
A local man is facing serious charges after damaging a natural gas well pad in Greene County. Heath A. Rankin, 33, of Carmichaels, Pennsylvania, has been indicted on a single count of damaging an energy facility.
According to the indictment, Rankin allegedly damaged the Burchianti Pad, a pad of five natural gas wells operated by Chevron North America Exploitation and Production Company, a division of Chevron USA, Inc., on or about March 26, 2014.
The indictment was returned on January 27, 2015, and Rankin made his initial appearance in federal court on March 5, 2015. He was subsequently ordered detained pending further proceedings.
A detention hearing is set for March 18, 2015, at 9:30 a.m. before Magistrate Judge Maureen P. Kelly. If convicted, Rankin faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Nelson P. Cohen, with the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pennsylvania State Police.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and Rankin is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
