In a shocking case of abuse of power, Heather D. Obrad, a 27-year-old correctional employee at Federal Corrections Institution Hazelton, has admitted to having sexual contact with an inmate.
Obrad, of Granville, West Virginia, pleaded guilty today to one count of Abusive Sexual Contact in a federal court in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
According to the court documents, Obrad engaged in the illicit behavior with the inmate from August to October 2020, while serving as a secretary at the facility.
Obrad is now facing up to two years of incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000. The actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher L. Bauer is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government, while the Office of Inspector General investigated.
The case was heard before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi, who presided over the guilty plea hearing.
Obrad’s case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding the trust and integrity of our correctional facilities. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor the case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
