Former BOP Official Pleads Guilty to Sex Crimes

BECKLEY, WV—In a shocking turn of events, a former Federal Bureau of Prisons official has pleaded guilty to engaging in sex with female inmates at the Federal Prison Camp at Alderson in West Virginia. 39-year-old Jarred Grimes of Inverness, Florida, has admitted to having sexual intercourse with four inmates and other sexual activity with two other inmates between November 2016 and December 2017. Grimes, a captain at the time of the crimes, was in charge of all correctional and security functions at the prison.

Grimes’ actions are a stark reminder of the abuse of power and trust that occurs when those in positions of authority exploit their positions for personal gain. The Federal Bureau of Prisons is charged with protecting public safety by ensuring federal offenders serve sentences of imprisonment in safe, secure and humane facilities. Assistant United States Attorney John File is handling the prosecution of Grimes, who faces up to ten years in prison when he is sentenced on October 17, 2018. United States District Judge Irene C. Berger presided over the plea hearing. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

According to court documents, Grimes engaged in the sex abuse of four female inmates and abusive sexual contact with two other inmates. The inmates were not capable of giving consent to engage in any sexual activity with Grimes, and his actions are a clear violation of their rights and dignity.
