Baltimore Man Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison
A 52-year-old Baltimore man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for failing to register as a sex offender. Dennis Morgan, 52, was sentenced to 18 months in prison, with 6 months to be served in a halfway house, followed by 5 years of supervised release, for his crime.
According to court documents, Morgan was convicted of Attempted Sexual Battery in Florida in 1996. He was required to register as a sex offender in Maryland after moving to the state, but failed to do so between August 2016 and November 2016. During this time, he resided and worked within the district of Maryland.
Acting United States Attorney Stephen M. Schenning praised the efforts of the United States Marshals Service and Virginia State Police in the investigation. ‘The dedication and hard work of the United States Marshals Service and Virginia State Police were instrumental in bringing this case to a successful conclusion,’ Schenning said.
Morgan’s failure to register as a sex offender put the community at risk, prosecutors said. ‘Morgan’s decision to fail to register as a sex offender was a reckless and irresponsible act that put the community at risk,’ Assistant United States Attorney Nadia Prinz said.
The investigation into Morgan’s failure to register as a sex offender was led by the United States Marshals Service, with assistance from the Virginia State Police. ‘The U.S. Marshals Service is committed to protecting the community from those who would seek to harm it,’ Marshal Johnny Hughes said.
Morgan’s sentencing is a reminder that failing to register as a sex offender is a serious crime that carries serious consequences. It is the responsibility of all sex offenders to register with the state and to comply with the terms of their registration.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Nadia Prinz and Joseph Baldwin. The investigation was led by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Virginia State Police.
