Sex Offender Fleeing Justice Lands 10-Year Sentence
A 44-year-old man from Punta Gorda, Florida, has been found guilty of failing to register as a sex offender, a federal crime that could land him in prison for up to 10 years.
Eric David Erdmann, who was convicted of a sex offense in Oregon in 2010, was required to register as a sex offender upon his release. However, instead of registering, he fled to Cambodia, where he was eventually arrested and served with a notice informing him that his passport was being revoked due to an outstanding arrest warrant in Oregon.
After being arrested by Cambodian authorities, Erdmann agreed to depart Cambodia voluntarily and returned to Florida in April 2016. Despite knowing he was required to register as a sex offender, Erdmann failed to do so and took up residence in Lee County.
The case against Erdmann was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael C. Baggé-Hernández.
According to testimony and evidence presented at trial, Erdmann absconded from registering as a sex offender in Oregon and traveled to the Kingdom of Cambodia. He was required to register as a sex offender following a July 13, 2010, sex offense conviction in Oregon.
His sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 22, 2017. Erdmann faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison for his failure to register as a sex offender, a federal crime that is taken very seriously.
As a convicted sex offender, Erdmann’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and a serious failure to take responsibility for his crimes. His conviction serves as a reminder that failing to register as a sex offender will not be tolerated and will be met with severe consequences.
