Wilson County Emergency Communications Accused of Retaliation

A lawsuit filed by the U.S. government alleges that Wilson County Emergency Communications (WCEC) in North Carolina engaged in unlawful retaliation against a former employee who complained of sexual harassment.

According to the lawsuit, Jennifer Riddle was a telecommunicator trainee at WCEC from 2017. She reported being sexually harassed by the Assistant Director of WCEC, which led to an investigation and the termination of the Assistant Director. However, Riddle claims she faced hostility from her supervisor and co-workers after disclosing that she had previously been sexually harassed and that WCEC failed to effectively deal with her harasser.

The U.S. government is seeking to require WCEC to develop and implement policies that would prevent retaliation and provide monetary relief for Riddle.

Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke stated, ‘The Civil Rights Division will not tolerate attempts by employers to silence victims of sexual harassment.’

The case is being handled by Senior Trial Attorney Christopher Woolley and Trial Attorney Vendarryl Jenkins of the Civil Rights Division’s Employment Litigation Section.

The lawsuit alleges that WCEC’s actions violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employers from discriminating on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, and religion, as well as from retaliating against employees for engaging in activities protected by Title VII.

The U.S. government’s lawsuit seeks to hold WCEC accountable for its alleged actions and ensure that employees are free to come forward to report discrimination or harassment in the workplace.
