A Reno man and registered sex offender, William Alan Barragan Diaz, was sentenced to 60 months in prison for receiving thousands of child sexual abuse images and videos. The crime occurred in Reno, Nevada, starting around June 6, 2024, when Diaz downloaded and possessed the illicit material. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) tipped off law enforcement, leading to a search warrant and the discovery of over 6,200 images and 400 videos of child sexual abuse material on Diaz’s cell phones.
The sentencing was the result of a joint effort by the Northern Nevada Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force and the FBI’s Las Vegas Field Office. The case falls under the Justice Department’s Project Safe Childhood initiative, which aims to combat child sexual exploitation. Diaz’s actions were deemed a serious threat to children due to his repeated exploitation.
The images and videos analyzed were of children under 12 years of age engaged in sexually explicit conduct and intercourse with adults. The government had recommended a 151-month sentence, but United States District Judge Anne R. Traum sentenced Diaz to the mandatory minimum penalty of 60 months, followed by 15 years of supervised release.
The sentencing demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement agencies to justice for vulnerable victims and the protection of young children from child predators. As part of the Project Safe Childhood initiative, the Justice Department and its partners remain dedicated to working together to bring child predators to justice.
