Kent Man Guilty of Sexually Abusing 14-Year-Old

A 36-year-old man from Kent, Washington, has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a 14-year-old child during a family gathering in Olympic National Park.

According to court documents, Christopher James Kuna provided alcohol to the victim and committed the sexual assault on August 24, 2020. The victim was a trusted family friend and was at a gathering with Kuna’s family and close friends.

The victim’s family reported the incident to local law enforcement after a trusted family friend assisted them in making the report. The National Park Service Investigative Division took over the investigation due to the jurisdiction being within a national park.

Kuna, who was more than 20 years older and much larger than the victim, told the victim he had been thinking about the assault for a long time. The victim was fearful of resisting Kuna due to their size difference.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, the government will not recommend a sentence above 87 months in prison. Judge Benjamin H. Settle is not bound by the recommendation and can impose any sentence allowed by law, which is life in prison.

Kuna will be required to register as a sex offender following any prison term. The case was investigated by the National Park Service and the FBI, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Angelica Williams, Jonas Lerman, and Hilary Stuart.

Kuna is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Settle on August 17, 2021. The maximum penalty for the crime is life in prison.
