Jarek William Hahn, Fentanyl Trafficking, Montana 2023

A Helena man has earned a spot behind bars for peddling poison on the dark web.

Jarek William Hahn, 30, of Helena, Montana, was sentenced to 15 months in prison on May 13 for his role in trafficking fentanyl purchased on the illicit internet.

According to court documents, Hahn used cryptocurrency to buy the deadly substance on the dark web and had it shipped to his doorstep. He then used some of it for personal use and sold some to support his habit.

Law enforcement recovered 64 fentanyl pills during a search of Hahn’s home. The investigation, led by the FBI and the Missouri River Drug Task Force, also involved the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Hahn pleaded guilty in December 2023 to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris presided over the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey K. Starnes prosecuted the case, bringing Hahn to justice for his crimes. Hahn’s use of the dark web and cryptocurrency to facilitate his illicit activities highlights the evolving nature of the fentanyl trafficking landscape.

The sentence sends a clear message that those who engage in this type of activity will be held accountable. As the nation grapples with the opioid epidemic, it’s crucial that law enforcement and the justice system work together to combat the flow of deadly substances into our communities.

With this conviction, law enforcement agencies have taken another step towards dismantling the networks that enable fentanyl trafficking. As the Grimy Times continues to shine a light on these crimes, we will keep pushing for justice and accountability.
