Efrain Cheverez, Fentanyl Distribution, Connecticut 2024

Hartford, CT – In a brutal crackdown on opioid trafficking, 42-year-old Efrain Cheverez was sentenced to 28 months in federal prison for his role in distributing fentanyl in Hartford.

According to court documents, Cheverez was part of a larger operation that was trafficking fentanyl from a residence on Crown Street in Hartford. Investigators found that the group was using an apartment on Nutmeg Lane in East Hartford to store, process and package narcotics for street sale.

On January 25, 2023, DEA agents conducted a court-authorized search of the East Hartford apartment and seized approximately 5,400 dose bags of fentanyl, one kilogram of unpackaged fentanyl, and items used to process and package narcotics. Three individuals, including Cheverez, were arrested at the scene.

That same day, a search of Cheverez’s Hartford residence revealed distribution quantities of fentanyl and crack cocaine, and approximately $30,000 in cash. The operation was a result of a joint investigation by the DEA’s Hartford Task Force, which includes personnel from the DEA Hartford Resident Office, the Connecticut State Police, and local police departments.

Cheverez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute, and to possess with intent to distribute, fentanyl on July 18, 2023. He is currently out on a $50,000 bond and is required to report to prison on July 1.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Geoffrey M. Stone through the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Program.
