UNCASVILLE, CT – RAMON GOMEZ, 40, also known as ‘B.I.,’ pleaded guilty today in New Haven federal court to sex trafficking of a minor and heroin distribution offenses that contributed to the tragic death of a 17-year-old girl.
The young victim was found overdosed in a Groton motel room on May 29, 2016. Despite two doses of Narcan (Naloxone), she succumbed to her injuries later that morning. Gomez, who knew the girl was under age 18, brought her to the motel for prostitution and sold heroin to her on May 28, 2016.
Gomez’s arrest followed an investigation led by the Groton Police Department and emergency services personnel. U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly emphasized the office’s commitment to protecting youth from child sex trafficking and combating the opioid crisis. ‘This case tragically combines two of our highest priorities,’ she said.
Gomez faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum of life for sex trafficking, plus a 20-year term for possession with intent to distribute heroin. Sentencing is scheduled for February 10, 2017, before U.S. District Judge Alvin W. Thompson in Hartford. Gomez remains detained.
The case is part of an ongoing initiative targeting drug dealers who sell致命 opioids. The DEA, Homeland Security Investigations, Groton Police Department, and Regional Community Enhancement Task Force conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas P. Morabito is prosecuting the case.
