Dejan Karlovic, Theft of Government Funds, New York 2024

Dejan Karlovic, 30, of Amherst, NY, has been sentenced to three months in prison for theft of funds related to a government program. Karlovic, a former Senior Grants Accountant at Jericho Road, stole $584,884.99 from his former employer.

According to U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo, Karlovic’s sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge John L. Sinatra, Jr. In addition to his prison term, Karlovic was ordered to pay restitution totaling $584,884.99 and forfeit a BMW, a pickup truck, and more than $240,000 in cash and financial accounts.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles M. Kruly, who handled the case, stated that between January and March 1, 2024, Jericho Road received more than $10,000 in federal grants and funding. As a Senior Grants Accountant, Karlovic had access to several Jericho Road commercial credit cards and other financial accounts.

Between March 1 and June 26, 2024, Karlovic submitted fake invoices to Jericho Road from a company called “D and D” and made them appear as expenses related to moving and relocation, which is one service Jericho Road provides to its clients. Karlovic then paid these fraudulent invoices using a Jericho Road commercial credit card, stealing a total of $584,884.99.

The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Philip Tejera. The investigation revealed that Karlovic had used his position to embezzle funds from Jericho Road, which operates the Jericho Road Community Health Center.

The case highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in government-funded programs. The sentence handed down to Karlovic serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit their positions for personal gain. As U.S. Attorney DiGiacomo noted, the sentence is a testament to the commitment of law enforcement to protecting the integrity of government programs.

In a statement, Assistant U.S. Attorney Kruly praised the work of the FBI and other law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation. The successful prosecution of Karlovic is a result of the tireless efforts of these agencies to root out corruption and hold those responsible accountable.
